Designed last century as a beautiful residential resort, Diamondhead ensures preservation of its character, value, and sense of community through its zoning ordinances. Its citizens are proud of that heritage and committed to retaining the best of the past while improving the city’s future.
Diamondhead’s zoning was adopted to maintain and improve the distinctiveness and livability built into the community from its beginnings. It seeks to encourage the most appropriate uses of land in the city, managing new growth and development while keeping the environment safe, healthy, and attractive.
Property owners play a key role in sustaining Diamondhead’s neighborhoods by maintaining their premises in keeping with the ordinances. Compliance with the following requirements prevents conditions that adversely impact the safety, health, aesthetics or property values of others:
Property Maintenance
● Maintain buildings in accord with the city’s building codes.
● Normal maintenance and repairs do not require a permit, but for constructing any improvements or altering the land (grading, filling, etc.) or the use of any land or structure, permits are needed. If in doubt, contact the Building Department at City Hall.
● Keep property free of litter and junk, including abandoned vehicles, building materials, furniture, appliances, tools, equipment, weeds, dead trees, etc. Screen open storage areas from public sight.
● Signs in yards are limited to:
- Political: no larger than 3 square feet displayed from 60 days before to 7 days after an election; name and contact info on them of person responsible for placing them.
Garage sale: maximum 1.5 square feet, from 5:00 p.m. Friday to 30 minutes past sunset the following Sunday and one additional day if a holiday falls on Friday or Monday.
Open house or real estate: maximum 3 square feet, from 5:00 p.m. on Friday to 30 minutes after sunset the following Sunday.
Parking
● Park in driveways, carports or garages only, except with permit for overflow parking.
● Store boats, trailers, lawn equipment, vehicles taller than 7½ feet, ATVs, jet skis, and the like behind the front line of the house and screened from view, with permit. Abandoned vehicles may not be stored unless screened from view.
● RVs, campers, or other motorized travel vehicles may park in driveways only reasonably long enough to load or unload.
● Vehicles over 10’ in height, dump trucks, and motorized construction equipment may not park in residential areas for more than 12 hours without city approval.
● Work vehicles may park on roadsides temporarily for actual work only.
● Parking in medians is prohibited without city authorization in advance.
Nuisances
● Disturbances in the neighborhood or annoyance, threat or endangerment caused by domestic animals are prohibited.
● Loud noises that interfere with enjoyment of property or public peace and comfort are prohibited. Construction and power tool or equipment noise before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m., loud sound equipment and motor vehicles, horn blowing except as danger signal, and fowl or other animals that make unreasonably loud noises are prohibited.
