Public Works Mechanic/Maintenance Employee

Purpose of Position

The Mechanic Employee in the Public Works Department provides maintenance and repair of public works equipment and facility.  Under the direction of the Public Works Director, the public works mechanic/maintenance work involves responsibility of the performance of skilled tasks in the basic maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, and other standard and special automotive equipment operated by the city as well as provided labor for landscaping and other beautification functions.

Salary/Hourly Rate shall be determined based on experience and certification(s).

Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic mechanical repairs and adjustments on all city equipment.
  • Makes emergency road calls to perform minor repairs on equipment or to tow disabled equipment to shop.
  • Operates and inspects equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Schedules and tracks maintenance and repairs using computer software and coordinates with others for scheduled maintenance to ensure equipment is available.
  • Performs regular scheduled maintenance on all city vehicles, including oil changes, tire rotation, and cleaning.
  • Assists in the installing and repair of traffic signs; paints streets and curbs; assists in constructing and erecting barricades.
  • Other duties as assigned.
