Weather Event Survey 05.09.2026
The City of Diamondhead is aware of the significant flooding and drainage issues experienced during Saturday morning’s severe storm event. An unusually high volume of rain fell in a very short period of time, creating runoff conditions far beyond what we typically see. The recent drought conditions also contributed to faster runoff, as the dry ground was unable to absorb water as effectively as usual. In some areas, ongoing MDOT trail construction along the interstate appears to have further intensified runoff toward nearby homes.
We understand how concerning it is to see water backing up into streets, ditches, and drainage areas. While these conditions can appear alarming, it is important to note that in several locations where recent drainage improvements have been completed, the systems did drain down relatively quickly once rainfall subsided. In many cases, this indicates the systems functioned as designed during an extreme weather event.
City officials and staff are working to assess affected areas and gather information. If stormwater entered your home during this event, please complete the form below to submit a report. This information will help us document impacts and better evaluate drainage needs throughout the community.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work through these issues together.
