Master Plan for Town Center Development in the City of Diamondhead
For many years, the Mayor and City Council for the City of Diamondhead have discussed adding a frontage road along I-10 to provide access to undeveloped land. In 2019, the City hired Linfield, Hunter and Junius to develop a master plan for this area which would include a mixed-use commercial area. The vision is to create a "Town Center" that would provide a walkable, downtown environment. It would encourage retail shops, restaurants and professional offices to locate in this area. There would be condos and apartments to further create a synergy in the Town Center. The master plan was presented to the City Council on June 2, 2020.
The City is now working with Orion Planning, an urban planning firm, to create new zoning codes for the Town Center. This will be form based code to allow for mixed-use developments in this area. This will determine the type of business and the types of buildings that can be located in Town Center.
The Town Center Zoning Code will be reviewed in a public hearing of the Planning and Zoning Commission on August 5 at 6pm. Then, it will be presented for approval by the city council on August 18 at 6pm.
